Mask textured surfaces — Step-by-step instructions

  • A person applying tape to a textured wall.
    Apply tape

Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Lay tape onto the surface, pressing down as you go.

  • A person applying a thin strip of caulk to the edge of painter's tape on a wall.
    Use caulk

Use a thin strip of paintable caulk to seal the tape. Apply a small amount (less than 1/8” / 3mm) to the edge of the tape.

  • A person using a cloth to smooth out caulk on painter's tape.
    Smooth it out

Smooth the caulk out with a rag or your finger to ensure it adheres properly.

  • A person removing painter's tape from a textured wall.
    Paint

Allow caulk to dry, and then paint the new colour. Allow paint to dry to touch and remove tape. Check the paint can for the manufacturer's dry times.
