Keep your floor beautiful

Keeping paint off a hardwood floor is a lot easier than trying to remove it later. In fact, trying to remove paint after it’s dried onto the floor could damage it. To protect your wood floor, 3M recommends Scotch® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape. Take the following steps before you begin painting.

Step-by-step instructions

  • A person rolling rosin paper on a wooden floor along a wall.
    Cover the floor

Rosin paper is available at hardware and home improvement stores. Roll out a piece of 3-foot (90 cm) wide rosin paper and place it along the trim.

  • A person using painter's tape to secure rosin paper along a baseboard.
    Attach tape

Secure the rosin paper to the floor along the baseboard with Scotch® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape. Tape the paper to the baseboard instead of the floor. Tape overlapping pieces of paper to each other and not the floor.

  • A person wiping paint spilled on a wood floor beside a can of paint.
    Clean spills fast

If paint drips or spills on your wood floor, be sure to clean it up as quickly as possible. Once paint dries on a wood floor, you’ll have to remove it by scraping or using a solvent, which could damage your floor.

  • A person using a ScotchBlue™ Painter's Tape Dispenser to secure rosin paper along a wall.
    Mask trim fast

For long stretches of trim, you can speed up the job by using a Scotch-Blue™ Painter’s Tape Dispenser. It’s designed to apply tape flush against trim quickly and easily.
